Mark Twain once said, "Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect." This truth is why I never want to be part of the "in crowd". I take deep value in originality, whether it is in style or personality. Sadly enough it is quite difficult to find, especially in high school.
In high school you see one person attempts to be original through their sense of style. However, soon enough the rest of the student population wants to copy. This just makes students' faces one big blur as I pass through the campus. I guess you can say they all look like clones.
I was taught to stand out from the crowd by my family. This quote always reminds me to pause and reflect on my originality. Do we want to look like a flock of sheep, all-similar to one another? Or do we want to be our own person? I for sure don't mind being the black sheep in the flock.
Society is quite strange. It seems as though society frowns upon people who are unique or different. Also it loves to follow the popular trend, whether it be sense of style to something as simple as what kind of school supplies students use. If someone has an eccentric style, the rest of society stares in shock. I don't see why it is so bad to stand out in the crowd. Is because society is scared of change? Trend is all about fitting in and not looking like the odd one out. What's so special about fitting in?
I love originality in ever shape and form. It's something I value in a person. This quote is something I strongly believe in and live my everyday life by. Especially being in high school and seeing how much the student population lacks this. Maybe they should stop worrying about being " cool" and try being something different. Unique. Strange. Odd. Original.
